The
Bethel Concert Choir was formed in 1980 and is comprised
of members of Bethel United Pentecostal Church. Since
that time the 90-voice choral group, directed by its
founder, Doug
Davis, Jr., has performed at numerous religious,
civic, and community events. From shopping malls, business
centers, parades, auditoriums, and stadiums, their exciting
and dynamic style has inspired many. They have performed
benefit concerts for The United Way, The United Cerebral
Palsy Association, Toys For Tots, and Childrens
Health Association. In addition to performing each Christmas
at shopping malls and Christmas tree lightings throughout
the metropolitan area they have also made yearly appearances
at the Long Island Festival of Trees and the European
American Bank Holiday Extravaganza.
In
1990 the Bethel Choir performed at the Superdome in
New Orleans, Louisiana and in 1998 at the Greensboro
Coliseum in Greensboro, North Carolina. The choir has
received numerous commendations and citations. In 1995
the choir won the McDonalds Tri-State Gospel Fest
competition which resulted in a showcase performance
at Lincoln Center Avery Fisher Hall in New York City.
In 1999 the choir won the first place Gospel Choir
Award in the annual competition sponsored by the
Parish Resource Center of Nassau County.
In
1997 the choir recorded its first full length album, Our
God Is One. In 2000 the choir released
a second album, Truth Shall
Triumph, and its first
holiday album, Christmas,
Once Again.
By
invitation of the mayor of Bethlehem, Israel, the Bethel
Concert Choir performed before a crowd of 15,000 people
at the International Christmas Choir Assembly in Bethlehems
Manger Square for two consecutive years (1998 and 1999).
They also gave a special performance in the Cathedral
of Nazareth which was broadcast on Israeli television
as well as television networks in the United States.
Members of the Bethel Choir were featured in
an ABC television special with Peter Jennings. In 2001,
the choir performed numerous public concerts in Scotland
and in the Netherlands.
The
members of the Bethel Concert Choir come from many different
backgrounds and ethnic groups. All of them have a testimony
of how the power of God has personally changed their
lives. The collective testimony of the members of the
choir is a declaration that the power of God has filled
the void in their hearts and has now become the centerpiece
of their very existence.
